Granada is located north-east of Málaga, some 400 kilometres south of the capital Madrid and at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The city is famous for its rich history that spans over 2,500 years. It became an important city under the Moors in the 13th century, and evidence of this can be seen throughout the city, not just in the Alhambra.

Guide to Learning Spanish in Granada
Granada is a city rich in culture, history and cuisine! Here are some tips on how best to enjoy your stay here:
Granada is considered the home of this culinary tradition, and the small dishes are deeply ingrained in the city's culture. Hundreds of bars across the city offer a complimentary snack with each drink. These range from simple snacks such as olives or roasted almonds, to more elaborate dishes of freshly fried fish or meatballs. If you really want to connect with the local culture, find the busiest tapas bars at around 9-10pm and mingle with the locals over some delicious food!
The Alhambra and the adjacent Generalife gardens are the number one tourist attraction in Spain, and for good reason. Spend the day (or perhaps 2?) exploring the sprawling UNESCO heritate site, the spectacular palaces and the beautiful gardens, either on your own, of as part of a guided tour. Make sure you book your ticket early, as there are only a limited number of tickets available on the day. A ticket allows you access to all of the expansive Alhambra grounds all day. If you want to also visit the Nasrid palaces, you have to pay extra and will also be given a specific time-slot for entrance - don't be late! See our Alhambra visitor's guide for more information.
In an around the city there are a number of vantage points to enjoy great views of the Alhambra. The most popular being the Mirador de San Nicolás. A beautiful square high up in the Albayzín neighbourhood offers panoramic views of the Alhambra, with the added bonus of the Sierra Nevada mountains as a backdrop. A number of restaurants around here also offer a terrace overlooking the palace complex, where you can enjoy the spectacular sunset over the Alhambra.
Another great vantage points include the Mirador de San Cristóbal - located higher up in the Albayzín neighbourhood, and slightly less crowded. Or if you want a more luxurious option, the 5* Hotel Alhambra Palace has a beautiful terrace with fantastic views.
Whether it's the narrow, winding streets of the Albayzín, or the riverside Carrera del Darro with it's historic buildings and great cafés with views of the Alhambra, Granada is best explored on foot. With the exception of the Albayzín, Granada is fairly flat, and easy to walk around. The abundance of shops, cafés and bars that you will discover along the way are just an added bonus!
