Meet Miguel: co-founder of Estudia-España

At Estudia-España, we believe that learning Spanish is about more than just mastering grammar – it's about immersing yourself in the culture, the people, and the way of life. Miguel, one of our co-founders, has been passionate about Spanish for over three decades. His journey with the language began long before apps and online courses made it easy to get started. Let's take a closer look at his story.

What inspired you to learn Spanish?

Back in 1990, I took a Spanish course in my hometown. I met some great people and quickly realised that to really learn the language, I had to go to Spain. But booking a course back then wasn’t as easy as it is today! I had to rely on travel agencies and long phone calls to schools. Eventually, I found my way to Spain, and that experience completely changed my relationship with the language. You can read more about it in this article.

What's your favourite city in Spain and why?

Granada, without a doubt. The mix of history, the stunning Alhambra, and the lively student atmosphere make it unique. But what really won me over? The tapas! Nowhere else in Spain do you get such high-quality tapas for free with your drinks. It turns every evening into a mini food tour.

Speaking of food, what's your go-to tapa?

It has to be jamón ibérico, thinly sliced and melting in your mouth. But I also have a soft spot for berenjenas con miel – fried aubergines with a drizzle of honey. Perfect with a cold beer on a warm Andalusian evening.

What advice would you give to someone starting to learn Spanish?

Enjoy the process and don’t rush it. Spanish isn’t just a language – it’s a culture, a rhythm of life. Take the time to enjoy Spanish music, watch Spanish films, and, if you can, spend time in Spain. Learning a language is not about getting every verb tense perfect from day one; it’s about making connections and experiencing the culture first-hand.

How has learning Spanish changed your life?

It has completely shaped the way I travel and interact with the world. Whether in Spain or Latin America, speaking Spanish has opened doors to experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. From chatting with locals in tiny village bars to getting insider tips that no guidebook could offer – it’s been invaluable.

What's the most memorable experience you've had while travelling in Spain?

There are so many, but one that stands out is spending a week in a tiny whitewashed village in the Alpujarras. No tourists, just stunning mountain views, great food, and long conversations with locals who welcomed me as if I were one of them.

What made you want to co-found Estudia-España?

After years of helping friends and colleagues figure out the best way to learn Spanish, it made sense to create something that made the process easier for everyone. I wanted to take the stress out of finding the right course and make it simple for people to have an unforgettable language-learning experience in Spain.

Do you have any tips for making the most of a language learning trip?

Say yes to everything. Join that local festival, go on that weekend trip with your classmates, and don’t just stick to people who speak your language. The best moments – and the best learning opportunities – happen outside the classroom. And, of course, order your drinks in Granada… you won’t regret it!
