Learn Spanish in Barcelona

Experience Barcelona: learn Spanish in one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

Barcelona brings together history, culture and life by the sea. Choose between Don Quijote Barcelona, Enforex Barcelona, Expanish Barcelona, Kingsbrook Barcelona and Linguaschools Barcelona, and combine your course with Gaudí’s architecture, the Gothic Quarter and the city beaches.

Why Barcelona is a great place to learn Spanish

Barcelona is cosmopolitan and full of energy, with students and professionals from all over the world. That makes it easy to settle in and make friends, while Spanish is the language you use in shops, bars and on the metro. Catalan is spoken here too, which many learners enjoy as a bonus rather than an obstacle.

  • Architecture Marvel at the Sagrada Família, walk through the Gothic Quarter, or discover Park Güell and the modernist houses of the Passeig de Gràcia.
  • Beach and nature Relax on Barceloneta beach after class, or take the cable car up Montjuïc for views over the city and the harbour.
  • Food and nightlife Enjoy tapas and Catalan specialities in El Born and Gràcia, and discover why dinner here rarely starts before nine.

What makes Barcelona special

Few cities combine a big-city lifestyle with the sea as naturally as Barcelona. Museums such as the Picasso Museum, markets like La Boqueria, football at FC Barcelona and a busy calendar of festivals mean there is always something to do. Good trains make day trips to Girona, Sitges or Montserrat easy.

Accommodation in Barcelona

You can stay with host families, shared apartments with other students or student residences. You book your accommodation together with your course; it usually runs from the Sunday before your course starts to the Saturday after it ends, and extra nights can be added.

Frequently asked questions about learning Spanish in Barcelona

Which Spanish courses can I take in Barcelona?

Our schools in Barcelona offer intensive courses, DELE and SIELE exam preparation, private lessons, semi-intensive courses that leave more free time, long-term and university preparation courses and courses combining group and private lessons. Open a school above to see their courses, lessons per week and class sizes, and ask us if you are not sure which course suits you.

When is the best time to learn Spanish in Barcelona?

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are ideal: warm, sunny and less crowded. Summer is hot and lively, with the beach at its best. Winters are mild, and the city is at its most local.

Do I need to speak Catalan to study in Barcelona?

No. Everyone in Barcelona speaks Spanish, and your course is in Spanish. You will see Catalan on signs and hear it on the street, which many learners enjoy as part of the experience.

Is Barcelona too touristy to practise Spanish?

The centre is busy, but the neighbourhoods where students live, such as Gràcia, Sant Antoni or Poblenou, are very local. Your teachers, host family or flatmates and the school’s activities give you plenty of chances to speak Spanish.

Can I combine a Spanish course in Barcelona with the beach?

Yes. Barceloneta and the other city beaches are a short metro or bike ride from the centre, and in summer many students head there straight after class.
